Located at an elevation of 3100 metres on the bank of Alaknanda River is a part of one of the Chota Chardham.
The town lies between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges 9 km east of Nilkantha peak. Badrinath was re-established as a major pilgrimage site by Adi Shankara in the ninth century. Badrinath has been mentioned as a holy place in scriptures and legends for thousands of years. According to the Bhagavata Purana, “There in Badrikashram the supreme being (Vishnu), in his incarnation as the sages Nara and Narayana, had been undergoing great penance since time immemorial for the welfare of all living entities. The temple in Badrinath is also a sacred pilgrimage site for Vaishnavites. The main attractions here are Badrinath Temple. The legend is that the Lingam made of Saligram actually found in Alaknanda River was enshrined in Tapt Kund later was shifted to the main temple by the King of Garhwal.
How to reach:
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun 317 kms by raod. There are helicopters available from Dehradun and the aerial distance is just 100 kms there are many providers of helicopter services.
By Rail: The nearest rail head is Rishikesh located a distance of 297 kms. However not connected with fast trains the main line is Haridwar located just 24 kms away and is also connected with most of the cities therefore the main railhead.
By Road: Badrinath is well connected by road network of NH58 that connects Delhi via Mana Pass which is near to Indo Tibetan border. There are coach services from Delhi and Rishikesh as well.
